This book was a page turner. The story had me wondering what was going happen next and on the edge of my seat as the story unfolded. I feel The Chain shows how most of the world shares their life openly on social media more easily than they do face to face in their normal life.
This story shows how one thing leads to another and how the outcome can be good or really bad. This story made me feel for the main character deeply. I wondered what I would have done if I was in her place, and how far I would go to get back my child back from the ones that took them away from me.
The story begins with one of those old chain letters or e-mails that most people have gotten sometime in their life. The big difference is that this chain letter you can’t rip up or just delete out of your email. When you become a link in this chain there is no way out. The chain must continue no matter what. If you try to break the chain the blow back will get you and everyone close to you.
This is what happens to the main character, Rachel O’ Neil. A single mom that has been fighting breast cancer for a good part of her life. She has had some dead end jobs but was a loving mother to her daughter and a fighter. But when she got the call from the chain her whole world came crashing down around her. The chain had her daughter Kylie and if she did not do what the chain told her what to do her daughter would be killed and they just start over with someone else. That moment I could understand what Rachel was feeling. You feel hopeless and would do anything they tell you to get back your child, even if means you have to go against everything you know is right to do, and go to dark side of the tracks just so you can get your child back. This story shows a mother’s love for her child. Rachel would do anything to get her back even if meant becoming a monster herself and kidnapping a child to keep the chain alive.
When I read this story it shows the parents in the this book updating their social media a lot, and how it makes it easy for anyone to find out everything about their family life, their past, present, and hope for the future. This story was a hit to my gut because I know people like that and sometimes they definitely overshare.
I will say that this is good story, and that how everything played out in it and how that evil part of the story played out, that in the end people are that dumb to fall into a chain like in this story. We all just need to be a little careful about what we put out in social media and if there is any blow back it’s not that bad and everyone can recover from it. Maybe a little more wiser with very little dark scarring.
I would like to add that I enjoyed the author’s use of popular trending show titles in their story. Like when Kylie and her friend Stewart were talking about Stranger Things, how they enjoy season three and how they are looking forward to see what was going to happen in the new season. I felt that part of the story added a touch of real life to the book to help the reader to get more into the story.
