This was a good book. I think the Library Edition art and color were very bright and easy to read. I found that these stories were very fast paced, and this book was a page turner. I was glued to the book and it was very interesting. These stories made me want to rewatch the tv series.
The first story in this book was the story about Will lost in the Other Side . He was fighting to stay alive as he kept thinking back to when he and friends were playing D&D. When he picked up a shotgun and aimed it at one of the creatures and shot he yelled out FIREBALL!! I thought it was nice that as you are reading Will’s story they show him thinking of D&D and how the Other Side is like a huge D&D game that he was live through.
Another part of this story was when Will found the alphabet on the living room wall with Christmas lights under each letter. Will figured out that if he touched the Christmas lights one at a time he could spell out words that would show up on the wall in his house in the real world. That little bit of communication gave Will a little hope.
I found Will’s story was well told and made you want more. It shows that one young man can fight through any thing if he has hope, love, and knows that his family and his best friends will not give up fighting to get him back to the real world again.
The second story was a nice look into when Dustin went to summer camp. The story shows an overview of what they went through to get Will back from the other side. It was very cool and I really enjoyed it. I thought was a nice touch.
I thought this part of the story was really informative about how Dustin met his Girlfriend Suzie. I enjoyed learning about the character’s pasts and how they met. It made the story more interesting. This part of the story branches the tv series and this book together.
When Dustin gets off the bus at camp and sees that a couple of bullies are picking on a kid, he goes over there and makes fun of the bullies, and that makes them stop picking on the kid. Dustin introduced himself to the kid, who was named Steve. They become good camp friends. Steve and another camper told Dustin about the mysterious things that were going on in the camp.
As Dustin enjoys normal camp things like who had the best model rocket and talking about D&D, he thinks back to some of the things that he, his friends, and Eleven went through, and some of the battles they had together. He then meets Suzie, who was also was into D&D, and they started to get to know each other.
The best part of this story was when Dustin, Suzie, and some of the other campers decide to and find out what was going on in the camp and to fight back. They found out it was all a dumb trick by some of the older camp counselors to scare the young campers.
By fighting back against the older counselors, Dustin and Suzie became closer, eventually become boyfriend and girlfriend, and have great adventures together. They had a great adventure in the tv series. It was cute to see them sing the Never Ending Story song together.
The last chapter of the book was very short and sweet. Erica felt like a lonely young lady. She was a huge D&D fan. Because she was a geek she felt like a outsider. When she got home from another bad day at school Erica raised her voice to her mom one too many times. Her Mom was fed up and made Erica give her all her D&D things and then sent Erica to her room. Eric was really sad then. Erica looked around for the canister full of the green liquid. She was planning to sell it.
Erica found the canister with the green liquid inside of it. Then she reached out to Dustin to find out where she could sell the government’s green canisters that Dustin and her had found in the Secret Russian Base. Dustin was not clear what Erica was asking him right off the bat, but after a moment passed Dustin told Erica that she could sell the canister to a chemical factory in Indianapolis After a few moments had passed of the talking to Erica, Dustin know what Erica was planning to do and decided he had to stop her. Dustin freaked out and rushed out of his house to go find Erica. On his way Dustin stops by Family Video to recruit Steve and Robin to help him stop Erica.
The three of them see Erica riding her bike on the street and stop her. Dustin and Erica scuffle over the canister and it flies into the street, cracking open. The green liquid fizzes down the street and into the gutter.
Dustin, Robin, and Steve feel bad as Erica falls to her knees and starts to cry. Dustin kneels down to Erica to talk to her and comfort her. Erica explains that her mother took her D&D books as a punishment and she can’t afford to buy more. She also laments the fact that none of her friends are nerdy enough to have their own books she can borrow. In the end, she ends up at Dustin’s house with everyone else, playing D&D and having a fun time.
This book was quite enjoyable and I thought it was a good companion to the TV show. I am really looking forward to the next volume, and want to see what lies in store for the characters next time.
