Hidden Pictures Review

The book was a very thrilling and well written book. I finished it in one day. This story was a little bit of a slow burn but after you get in to it you will be hooked. The background of the character Mallory Quinn being a 20 month recovering drug user that had gotten her life in order and gotten a job to be a live-in babysitter to a 5 year old boy name Teddy was one of the reasons I was pulled into this book. The writer really draws the reader into a world where there is no crime, everyone knows each other, and everything seems copacetic, until the story starts to change and the author shows the dark side of this happy world. There’s always shadows hiding in the background waiting to shake up the peacefulness of your world.

The other reason that I enjoyed this book was the drawings that accompany the story. The early drawings show a young child’s simple drawings and how they see are world through their eyes. The other drawings are more dark, bringing to mind loss, sadness, and wanting. I felt the drawings helped the whole story to move along smoothly.

The first part of the book when Mallory meets Teddy for the first time was really cute. It showed how Teddy bonded with Mallory and the first drawing in the story that we see is stick figures of Mallory and Teddy holding hands outside and smiling. That was the first drawing in the book and after that there are a few more happy drawings, but then the drawings get darker and the story gets more creepy as you see the shadows slowly creep into this story.

This book would have you wondering what is going on here. How do all of these odd dark drawings come out of a 5 year old boy? When you learn more about the drawings and the story behind them you will be shocked. After you know the story and you see Mallory try to find out the answers, she gets pulled into a story that will make you sad and mad at the same time. When all is said and done you will feel like you have been on a long confusing ride that may shake you up for a bit, but you feel happy and glad at the end of that ride.

I would like to add that the artist that drew all of the art in this story really put their feelings into their work.
