Alita Last Order Omnibus Vol.1 - Review Part 2

This is the second part of my review of this omnibus. The stories in this book will pull on the reader’s emotions. If you are not ready for an emotional ride then do not read these stories. They can drain you and make the reader feel a little bit mad and sad. That is how I felt as I read these stories. Like I said before this book will not let you go until you finish it.

The story shows Alita, Professor Nova, and the Alita clones standing on a huge black circle with small white circles that are landing pads that are part of a space ship landing bay. The five were greeted by a tall man that was wearing well done space clothes. Alita introduced herself to him. He gave her a passing glance. The tall man tells them about G.E.N.E. project. Professor Nova did not let on that he already knew about this project before anyone else did. The tall man was pleased with Professor Nova’s knowledge but did not like his smart ass attitude. Professor Nova orders Alita to deal with their host as they had more important things to do there. Alita grabbed the tall man’s shoulder and pinned his right arm behind his back causing him to YELL OUT in pain. Alita informed him that he was their hostage and will be one until they were safe. The tall man deals with the four Alita clones quickly by encasing them in gel blocks. Alita tries to stop him, but he gets hold of Alita and rips her into two parts, then encases her into two gel cubes. After all of that he ejects everyone but Professor Nova out of the space station into the depths of space.

That part of the book shows that some times you make a deal with a demon, the devil will pop up out of nowhere and mess up the deal you had with the demon. The devil is out to make sure no one messes up what he has done and will do anything to make sure that does not happen.

The next part of the story has Alita and her clones floating in outer space to their unknown destiny. Their gel cubes started to head towards Earth’s atmosphere and things did not look good for them, but an astronaut rocketed over to them. The astronaut grabs their gel cubes and pulls them back into the space station. The astronaut frees Alita’s two halves from the gel cubes and puts her into storage baskets. The astronaut tells Alita that his name is Ping and the little robot that puts on his astronaut suit is named Kale. He tells Alita that the only reason he saved them is that he thought he could make something off of them. Alita explains that they came to find the brain vault so they could scan her friend’s brain onto a brain chip then clone him a new body. Ping and Alita make a deal so they both can get what they want. Ping takes Alita to his friend that has a huge robot that can get the access to the blueprint of the brain vault. Ping explains that all of the brains in the vault are used just for the company to harness the brain dreams that flow into a inner fantasy called the Argo Navis. All the brains are just used to keep the Argo Navis running and Alita’s friend Lou’s mind is one those brains that was being used to keep the Argo Navis running. After Alita was told all of this you could tell she was MAD and was going make the company pay for doing this to her friend like that.

This part of the story really reinforces one of the main themes of the whole omnibus, which is that you don’t FUCK with Alita or anyone that she cares for or loves. IF you do, be ready to have your life going to hell with her chasing after you. After Alita has vowed to kill everyone and the company that has hurt her friend Lou, Ping takes Alita to a friend that can make her a new robotic body that was even better that one than her last one. Ping walks into the room that Alita woke up in and sees her standing in front of a window with sunlight flooding the room. All Ping can see is the silhouette of her. Ping approaches Alita and asks her how she feels. Alita turns her head to look back at Ping and says “Never been better.”

I found that this one moment with them was VERY POWERFUL! It shows the reader that you cannot keep a great warrior cyborg down when she has a vow to keep. I feel in the next book that Alita is going to start taking names and make the ones that have hurt her loved ones pay and nothing in the known universe will stop her from reaching her goal.
